Commercial photographer Andy Johnson always had a passion for photography. Then, following a life-changing illness from which he has happily recovered, he started working in a new style, which has reinvigorated his love for the medium.
Andy is a member of The Society, which he sees, particularly through its Journal,
as keeping him in touch with what is happen- ing in photography. It also allows him to put something back into the medium.
I met Andy and his wife, Maria, at their home in West London.
So, what advice would he offer to young pho- tographers wanting to break into the field? At this point in the interview, Maria chips in, and says, “Don’t do it!” She and Andy laugh. Andy sums up the current situation as, “Too few jobs, and too many photographers.” He talks to students, and is concerned that lecturers and universities aren’t being honest about the job situation. He emphasises that business skills are essential to creating a successful business. “Taking the photographs takes up 10% of your time”, he says. “The marketing, meet- ings, post production and administration make up the remainder.” He suggests, “Don’t try and find a niche market: be diverse build up a portfolio.”
